New Canada Line Skytrain

I'm seeing quite a bit of excitement about this actually. I know lots of people who are going to go to the opening ceremony today and ride the train free. I heard some grumbling about how it didn't open first thing this morning, so it couldn't be taken to work. Other than this, people seem kind of happy. We do need more and better public transit in this city, in my view, so this is a step in the right direction.

August 17 at 1:00 p.m.

This is the date and time the gates will be opened to let the public ride the rails. From 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm explore the Canada Line fare free.

I've just found a press release floating around with some opposing views about the opening of the Canada Line and thought I'd put them here. A protest is apparently planned.

"Canada (RAV) Line Opening Demo

*Monday August 17th, 1:00 pm
"Olympic Village" station of the Canada Line
(near W 2nd Ave & Cambie, just west of the bridge)*

Meet outside the bldg, to the right (east) of the glassed-in entrance.
*Access* - Bus: The Cambie and VCC (Gr Nor Way) buses stop nearby.  Vehicle: parking is best on the North side of 2nd or 6th Ave (they curve and blend at Cambie)-- a free lot behind Maynards old brick bldg.  Also free on Commodore, and in SEFC streets.
*
Bombardier and SNC Lavalin will be celebrating the completion of the RAV line on August 17th with the Provincial Government.  There are a few things they won't be talking about at their celebration...*

They won't be talking about the fact that a fraction of the $2billion budget could have saved social housing at Athletes Village, funded homeless shelters, and built the famous 14 social housing sites in time for the Olympics (only 2 are under construction).  They won't be talking about the exploitative conditions under which migrant workers were forced to work on the project, many originally working for as little as $3.50 an hour.  They won't be talking about the fact that both Bombardier and SNC Lavilan were once war profiteers / weapons manufactures and continue to enjoy sweetheart deals (read preemptive bailouts) by their friends in government.  They won't discuss how the 2010 Olympic Games, the justification for this project, carry a legacy of entrenching poverty, continuing colonization, environmental destruction, and the off-loading debt on public while securing profits for corporations.

Please join us for a demonstration at the opening of the RAV Line, "Olympic Village" station, 1pm Monday.
