Muppet Oscar the Grouch is the face of Waste Reduction Week in Canada, taking place October 19 -25. The week marks a worldwide effort to promote waste reduction and the beloved grumpy muppett, who lives in garbage can is the perfect mascot to educate about garbage and waste.

The program is developed and delivered by a coalition of 13 different recycling councils and sister organizations across the country who foster and promote waste reduction and conservation. It's aimed at encouraging individuals to reduce, reuse and recycle in all aspects of their lives.

The character will be featured in ads aimed at educating and encouraging the public to take part.

In a lifetime, the average North American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage, and a 68 kilo adult will leave a legacy of 40,825 kilos of trash, according to figures from Natural Resources Canada posted on the Waste Reduction Week in Canada website.

Oscar the Grouch is a green muppet from Sesame Street, he has no nose and lives in a garbage can. He loves trash and his presence during Waste Reduction Week might help get children and parents alike more involved in the process of cleaning up our planet.
Oscar is performed by Muppeteer Carroll Spinney. Spinney's other lead character is Big Bird. During the first season of Sesame Street, the street set was arranged such that Spinney, who is right-handed, was forced to operate Oscar's head with his left hand. A subsequent redesign of the set allowed him to switch hands. Spinney has said in interviews that he modeled Oscar's voice on that of a grumpy New York cab driver he once hailed.

The artist who did this work on a wall in Old Street, London is called Blam. Seems even the anti-graffiti squad liked it because they left Oscar after the cleaning. It's a really nice piece because of the placement, there're always other bins around...

If anyone is interested he's available for sale. $3000. Fully working and animated, custom built by the Sesame Street Live stage show company for FAO Schwarz. One of approximately 50 made and even the company itself wasn't aware of any still around. You would have to arrange shipping from Cleveland Ohio.

If not, enjoy him and good luck with Waste Reduction Week. :)
