PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has come up with a novel fundraising idea just in time for the holidays.  The animal rights group will be selling environmentally friendly coffins so that animal rights activists and supporters can literally take their love of animals with them to the grave.

The PETA coffins will cost between $620US and $670US and are assembled by The Old Pine Box company in Washington state.  The coffins will be made from unstained and untreated wood and contain no hinges, screws or other metals.  They are assembled using earth-friendly glue that is not animal based and are decorated with PETA imagery and slogans.

Some of the earth-friendly coffins will even play a recorded message so that the dearly-departed can voice their support of animals from the grave.  A bit spooky when you think of it, but definitely something new and different.  $75US from the sale of every coffin will go to PETA.

A New Mexico company is building all-wood human coffins in a partnership with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. They bear painted slogans, such as "Lifetime PETA Member" or "I saved 500 animals."

Another serves up a last laugh that plays on a long-running PETA advertisement: "Told You I Wouldn't Be Caught Dead in Fur!"

The coffins, which went on sale last week, are priced from $620 to $670, which includes a $75 PETA contribution. Made of wood, they are designed to be Earth-friendly, with no screws, nails, hinges or animal-based glues.

This is a very interesting idea - not sure about the voice bit, that's true.. Is this a competitive price for a coffin? I'm not sure.

By all due respect, no animal and this includes Human do need a coffin that prissy, an old Box would do or just some drapes are fine to. Plan a tree on top and all be perfectly natural and eco friendly.

It was very lucky to have my camera when these nice girls rallied for PETA. So I had the chance to show their efforts.

I chose to cremate when my beloved cat died.  A lot of places don't allow you to bury your animals in the backyard anymore.
