NP Rank:
Paradise under attack, Or the Human Cancer.
by, Uwe Paschen.
Japan is a Paradise of sorts, yet one that is under attack due in part to natural phenomenon’s such as Earthquakes and Typhoons, as well as Tides and Tsunamis yet the greatest damage is due to mismanagement, Causing major erosions. Most of this erosion could easily be avoided, since it is due to human Management or rather mismanagement. On top of that we have pollution.
Much of this mismanagement does happen in Agriculture and can be changed, with out losing productivity. Worth yet the implementation of good management practices would increase the productivity as well as the overall health of the environment and the individuals alike.
Some of this mismanagement is due to modern consumer demands that simply do expect the best looking apples at all times and won’t even look at a healthy yet not perfectly shaped apple. This has become a serious problem forcing much waste and usage of chemicals and stimulants even GMO to meet that demand and be able to sale once product.
Even those consumer that do buy Organic, expect flawless products wish causes a large amount of waste if the product cannot be transformed into Jam, Sauce or pickled. A re-education of the consumer is needed, as well as consumer awareness; wish is almost non-existent nowadays in industrialised countries especially.
Yet, there is much wish could be avoided even though much is imperfect in our society at large and even problematic. We do not need to lose 3 millimetres worth of good topsoil every year due to Cultivating and leaving the topsoil exposed for weeks on ends, and being blown away or washed away.
Nor do we need to use plastic for Potato’s or Onions to stop weeds from Growing and then latter burn the plastic causing toxic fumes and contaminating the ground water as well. Yet we do it even though regulations are in place that outlaw the burning of plastic and encourage recycling and good management, we fail to enforce those regulations or fail to follow them not taking our individual impact serious at all.
Then we have water tables dropping, due to massive and ever better drainage system. So Farmers may get on the field a couple of days earlier and be able to plant right away, rather then waiting for the water table to absorb the rain water in the spring. This cause trees and forests to dye out due to an ever sinking water table and will cause desertification in the next decade.
We do have a great many rules and laws as well as by laws and government agencies that do offer free consulting and trouble shooting. However, we do not have enough people able to see the big picture and the impact of each little farmer on the environment. Some do and try yet give up, because they feel that they cannot compete and may not be able to pay the bills if they do it right.
Why agriculture and Forestry as well as fishery have to be taken out of the competitive system and broth back into a long term responsible management system that allows us to feed every one and still making certain we do not cause any damage to our eco-system. This would also demand a re-education of the consumer to accept that you cannot have strawberries in December nor live of only five food groups either.
Should we not drastically reform Agriculture, Forestry, Fishery and Waste management with in the next 5 years, we may very well be unable to feed any one any where with in 5 to 15 years from now. Until now the damage was slow and progressive, not noticeable right away for most, however it is an exponential problem that is now becoming alarming even catastrophic and can be noticed by all not only the experts any longer.
This to the point that it is time to suspend some capitalistic freedoms and implement disaster management laws to avoid a total destruction of our environment. To allow all life to go on. Moreover, to avoid a total Human and environmental genocide. We do no longer have the luxury of time, and yes the problem is that serious.
We have the luxury to live in what I call a paradise, since Japan is blessed with a great moderate climate, good rain fall and good land for agriculture as well as a sea abundant in Sea food at least that used to be so. We live close to the sea and I work with Farmers and environmental issues here. We see the destruction and pollution every day and get the lab results of contaminated ground water having to rase the minimum allowed levels of toxins every decade.
The Earth eco-System can not take much more and nor can we Humans since most of those poisons and toxins are accumulative and can not be rejected by the Human body either, killing us slowly. We worry about Tobacco when this is the least of our problems. Driving SUV and killing with every step we undertake, killing our self and every thing else as well. The Earth may and hopefully will survive this and recover, however we will not. Humanity and all other mammals will be extinct should we fail to act now and change not only radically yet make incredible sacrifices as well.
It is our choice and our responsibility what will be.

Really good piece Paschen - thanks for bringing our attention to this.

Great story Pachen, nice to know what is going in the world. Glad we are not the only ones having environmental problems. If anyone can stop it, it is the Japanese.

Great story, Paschen. The irony is that fruit/veg that looks perfect may in fact be more 'flawed' through the unecessary use of pesticides! There is only one apple shop in all London I can find that sells real old fashioned varieities of English apples, flaws and all. Scrumptious!

What amazes me is that the authoritioes that are supposed to be in charge seem not to be interested in these issues! Since researching these issues, I have been surprised that they receive so little reporting in the press!

Thank you Amy, I just finished reading the last reports published on the changes comparing 2006 with 2007 and the graphs over the last decade and the last 50 years in comparison. It is accelerating expotencialy and faster then previously predicted.

I would think it is a disaster that every one is polluting and having serious problems, all Human made btw.

Yes, You are quiet right, the pesticides do not only harm us, they do also reduce the nutritive quality of the Fruits or Vegetables. And it is getting hard to find real Natural Fruits and Vegetables with out GMO, pesticides or herbicide residue on them. The perfection lays in the imperfection. Worms are healthier then chemicals.

Well, The authorities work 9-17 and Monday till Friday and they can only advise and recommend as well as enforce the laws that are available and that only when they cash some one. Yet most times they do not want to cash any one since they know that farmers are in some cases already stretched to the limit and it would put them out of business.
We have to take Farming, Forestry and Fishery out of the Capitalistic system and regulate them separately and responsibly. Further we do has to force farmers to learn and go to College for environmental Science and Agriculture and no longer allow some one to farm just because Dad used to farm but because he or she actually know what they are doing. An Farmers as well as Forestry and Fishery have to held accountable and the Public will have to accept the eat what is and can be grown locally.
