Simulation of Partial Eclipse of the Sun from Singapore : January 26th 2009

A partial solar eclipse will be visible to those in Indonesia, India, Southern Africa, and Australia on Monday (which is today if you're antipodean).

If you want to check out this phenomenon, do not look directly at the sun! The tried-and-true method for safe solar-eclipse viewing is to make a DIY pinhole camera:
Get two pieces of white card and poke a tiny (1mm or so) hole in one of them.
Hold the  card with the hole just over the card without the hole, and the eclipse will be writ small onto the lower card.

Here's what it looks like.

Those with sunlight filters will be able to stare at the sky Monday afternoon, although only several parts of the archipelago will enjoy the annulus in its most identifiable form.

Its path will pass through the southern part of Sumatra including Tanjung Karang in Lampung and Tanjung Pandan in Belitung, the western part of Java including Cilegon, Serang and Anyer and the central part of Kalimantan including Puruk Cahu and Samarinda in the east.

The eclipse will be annular in regions covering south of Africa, Antarctica, South East Asia and Australia.

Annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon is farther from the earth than normal in its elliptical orbit and hence, its apparent size is not sufficient to cover the sun completely, Director of Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) C B Devgun told PTI.

Therefore, even though the sun-moon alignment is perfect, the moon will appear slightly smaller in diameter than the sun and a thin ring of sunlight will remain visible around the dark silhouette of the moon, he said.

This is a photo taken from Pune, India; during the solar eclipse of 1st Aug. '08. At first there was slight disappointment due to cloud cover, but soon it turned out to add beauty to the event!
This photo was taken through Canon 350D at 70mm focal length and keeping a couple of layers of welders' sheet in front as a solar filter!

This is a picture that me or my girlfriend (we swaped the camera a lot) took during the solar eclipse of April 8th, 2005 from La Guaira, Venezuela.
It's released under a Creative Commons license which only requires that you give credit if you use it for whatever, so do enjoy... if possible drop me a note through Flickr to see where it was placed so I may rejoice on the fruits of my work ;).

Jakarta, 26 january 2009 -- For the first time in 2009, a solar eclipse appear again. Many Indonesian people so enthusiast to watch this moment, because this phenomenon will appear in 2016. A recreation park like Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Boscha observatory and Taman Ismail Marzuki is very crowded. "I'm very currious, cause i never seen this before" - said the visitors. many people goes there because in that day, indonesia celebrate Imlek ( a china new year).

A moeslem indonesia also celebrate this phenomenon by doing "sholat gerhana" (it's pray when eclipse appear). they doing this as thank's to the god.

This phenomenon can be watch from 16.00 PM - 17.06 PM. unfortunely, from jakarta can not watch full eclipse. it's only 80% cover. you can watch full eclipse from Tanjung Karang, Lampung or Samarinda kalimantan. A rainy cloud make this phenomenon bugging. to watch this, you need special eyesglasses or filter. a normal eyes can not see this because the intensity of sun is very high and 100% not recommended see this without any protection.

A partial solar eclipse occurred on August 1st 2008. A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun and covers a part of the Sun. In Iceland It was possible to watch the eclipse between 8:15 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. The next total eclipse can be seen in Iceland on March 20th 2015. Total eclipse occurs when the Moon cover the Sun completely. This photo was taken in Selfoss, a small town with 6000 inhabitants placed about 50 km east from the capital city of Iceland, Reykjavík. The photo was taken around 10:30 a.m. with the goal of capturing good photos of the eclipse.
