.... Sumatran Orangutans (P. abelii) are critically endangered due to vast areas of their forest habitat being destroyed for conversion to oil palm plantation. Some UN scientists believe this could lead to the extinction of the species by 2012. The word orangutan is derived from the Melay and Indonesian words orang meaning "man" and hutan meaning "forest" thus "Person of the forest".
