This is the PetroCanada refinery located in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada. Just east of Edmonton with a nearby (a few kilometers) population of 1 Million people. An 'upset' caused this flaring. The black smoke is unburned petroleum products including Hydrogen Sulfides. Just another day in Alberta and our contribution to global warming - after all it is cold here! There is another view here

The Petro-Can refinery looks like this once a month or so. The Alberta Government does not care about it so there is no incentive to stop. It looked even worse today(Feb 14, 2009) sine both flares where big and black. Just a week ago it was the same thing.

Just be glad you dont live in Sherwood Park.
