Pink Dolphins: Rare Albino Amazon River Dolphin Spotted in USA
A rare albino dolphin has been spotted in Lake Calcasieu, Louisiana and photos of the mammal are now circulating across the Internet. Albinoism in dolphins renders them pink, bright pink in fact, and they are quite an unusual sight.
Even more unexpected than a pink dolphin is seeing a pink dolphin in a fresh water lake. Most people think of salt water oceans when they think of dolphins but this rare albino was seen in a fresh water lake. While it may seem surprising there are freshwater species of dolphins.
The pink dolphin captured on film was happily living with his pod and his odd coloring did not seem to have impacted his socialization. Identified as an albino Amazon River Dolphin, also called an Amazon River Boto, the bright pink dolphin seen in Lake Calcasieu, Louisiana is the color of bubblegum.
See a photo of the pink dolphin swimming beside a grey pod mate.
"I just happened to see a little pod of dolphins, and I noticed one that was a little lighter.
"It was absolutely stunningly pink.
"I had never seen anything like it. It's the same color throughout the whole body and it looks like it just came out of a paint booth.
"The dolphin appears to be healthy and normal other than its coloration, which is quite beautiful and stunningly pink.
"The mammal is entirely pink from tip to tail and has reddish eyes indicating it's albinism. The skin appears smooth, glossy pink and without flaws.
"I have personally spotted the pink dolphin 40 to 50 times in the time since the original sighting as it has apparently taken up residence with its family in the Calcasieu ship channel.
Pink dolphins of other species have been seen elsewhere in the world but speculation is that they get their coloring from things like pollution and food stock. In Hong Kong an entire tourist industry has been built around looking for pink dolphins in the China Seas.
But, I am assured, Hong Kong is the best place in the world to see the Indo-Pacific humpback species. So I board the bus to link up with a Hong Kong Dolphinwatch excursion into the South China Sea.
On the way to our departure point on Lantau Island, we are told no one knows exactly why the dolphins are pink rather than the usual grey we see off Australian shores. The Hong Kong dolphins are born grey, then turn pink. They live in fairly gloomy water with no predators, so pink is fine in their habitat...
Then the amazing happens. Forty-five minutes into our trip, a pink beak appears in the water. It seems to do a 360, then out of the ocean flips a pink-as-fairy-floss dolphin!
Four of them are nearby. They frolic and loll and seem to be enjoying our company. The 360-degree manoeuvre, it soon becomes apparent, is their way of checking the coast is clear before they breach. They stick their heads up, check in all directions and bang! They're up, out and splashing down merrily. The proximity of fishing boats and anchored cargo ships suggests why they exercise caution.
It's just so clever. They are beautiful. For an hour we sit and watch them and they seem to watch us.

I have been myself on an excursion with Dolphinwatch in HongKong, so when I created my first marble mosaic, a copy of an antique mosaic, I used their unusual pink color as an inspiration.
So thanks for the inviteTina, its a great pleasure to share the photo.

Map of Lakes in Lake Charles area. Lake is no longer totally freshwater with ship channels from the Gulf and other canals. there is some environmental damages from this. but the ship channel is how the dolphins got in.

Thanks, Tina. Hopefully, people will stay away from this pink (bubble gum) dolphin, which is amazing.

Where we were down in the Amazon, there is a species of river dolphins that are all pink- not rare at all. They are considered bad luck to kill, so they're doing ok, in the scheme of things.

I wonder if the pink color is the same all over..perhaps they are pink also because of sunburn? I have heard of albino white dolphins, but never a pink one before. This almost seems that the dolphin was put there by humans...that is a possibility. But why would anyone do that?
