Post Gustav Flight Over New Orleans

Looks like the electric company is getting its act together.  http://www.nola.com/hurricane/index.ssf/2008/09/power_should_be_restored_in_gr.html  Story says that within days all power will be restored.  I learned that several people from my work group never left town.  Now that Ike is a Category 4 and has not yet left the Atlantic Ocean, I'm certain many people in the hurricane risk zone are reasoning, debating, and revising plans for millions of things.  What's clear to me is that hurricane preparation is a learn by doing thing.

Flash...power's on at home and I'm on the road back.

We're safe at home, cats are back to their routines; male is sitting on the back of the couch, female is sleeping upstairs.  Amazingly, three newspapers were on our lawn; Sunday's, Monday's (day Gustav hit), and today's.  We were greeted by a tree limb that partially blocked our side street, a few branches littering our back yard.  AC is now own and motor-mouth Jindal (our governor) is on TV...not a criticism, it's our blessing.

Curfew for New Orleans has improved; 2 am to 6 am for zipcodes 70112, 70115, 70116, and 70130; most of the city 10 pm to 6 am.  City Hall reopens Monday.  38 looting arrests; reportedly, people are going around apartment complexes and kicking in doors.

Update, 9/6/08, 20:50 CDT,

ORLEANS

-- 90 percent of customers got power by Saturday. Restoration should be 100 percent complete by Monday.

--As of 4:30 pm Saturday, 13878 customers, or 10 percent of Entergy's customers in the parish, remained without power.

--Entergy New Orleans opened three customer information centers: 3400 Canal St.; 4021 Behrman Hwy, Suite J. in Algiers; and in the Household of Faith at 9300 I-10 Service Road. Customers can find out restoration efforts by address, ask safety questions and pay bills.

DrMarty, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Are you back in town? Is everything ok with your house?

Amy,

We are 100 miles out of New Orleans, waiting for confirmation that power is on in our neighborhood.  Plan is to return tomorrow.  Our friends checked out the house and it appears to have survived without incident.  Appreciate your concern.

Great article, you should definitely keep us updated on what's going on over there!

This was taken in the Lower Ninth Ward as Gustav was coming in. I stayed for the storm, rather than deal with Contraflow and Evacuation and not be able to house a newly rescued pet. And of course, I couldn't have gotten this footage if I'd left.

After my flight was cancelled to New York, my friends and I knew we had to get out of the city. It took us 29 hours to get from the Garden District in New Orleans to Orlando, Florida.
