Fish species in Monterey Bay Aquarium #11

A prickly shark was put on exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for four hours on Wednesday, June 11. The prickly shark is very rarely seen, and it is only the second time in the world that one has been captured. The first prickly shark caught was also by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in July 1990.

The shark was captured by the Moss Landing Marine Lab at 11 p.m. Tuesday and put on display, but aquarium staff determined it wasn't doing well in captivity and returned it to the wild at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. On exhibit, it flipped upsidedown and went into a hypnotic state, signaling researchers that it needed to be released back into the bay.

"Deep water animals have trouble adapting," said Ken Peterson, an aquarium spokesman. "We were a bit disappointed that it wasn't here longer to connect with visitors face to face."

Prickly sharks are characterized by their scales, which resemble thorns, and two tail dorsal fins. The specimen on display at the Monterey Bay Habitats Exhibit was male, 6 feet, 8 inches long, and 189 pounds.

Despite having had to release the prickly shark, aquarium researchers plan to track their unexpected prize for the next several months.

Although no research was conducted during the shark's overnight stay, researchers tagged it with an electronic tracking tag, which will pop free from the shark in six months.

"There is potential to gain a lot of information from the tag," Peterson said. "It still record the depths, the temperatures it prefers and the latitude and longitude it covers."

Monterey Bay Aquarium is renowned for its successful shark exhibits, especially that of its great white sharks.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also one of the best places to see other sea creatures, birds, and algae.  I've always loved visiting it.

I think I've been there once, Pythiian, and I agree, it was great.

Thanks for contributing, Miss Talky!

Wow. It was six feet long. I thought it was plate-sized like similar looking china hi-fin sharks (catfish really) that are common in our petshops.
