MUSSOORIE: 6 Aug: The Nagar Palika, here, in its endeavour to make the hill town a completely plastic free zone, took out a mass awareness rally under the leadership of Palika President OP Uniyal. The rally began from Anupam Chowk, Landour, and passed through various bazaars like Kulri, and Mall Road, which culminated at the Gandhi Chowk.
The participants were carrying placards that said, “Make Mussoorie free of plastic.”
Participants in the rally collected plastic carry bags from the shops in the market and persuaded shop owners not to give them with the products from today onwards. Outlining the importance of banning plastic completely from the town, OP Uniyal requested traders and tourists, alike, to avoid the use of plastic bags in day-to-day activities.
Tourist Baljeet from Moga, Punjab, appreciated the efforts of the Nagar Palika and said, “This is a wonderful campaign, which should be carried to all towns of the country.”
SS Rawat ‘Kharkai’, a journalist, commended the Palika for the effort and said the campaign ought to be long lasting, only then it would have some meaning.
It is important to note that similar campaigns have been carried out in the past but have fizzled out in due course.
SDM GC Gunwant said. “Using plastic carry bags is totally banned under the law and stringent action will be taken against the perpetrators”.
