Ralph Snodsmith, Gardening Hotline Host, Dead at 70

Ralph Snodsmith, noted gardening expert, has passed away at the age of 70. Snodsmith had worked in radio and television for years and published several books on gardening. Snodsmith died from complications after a broken hip.

The injury caused Snodsmith to be absent from his nationally-syndicated radio show "Ralph Snodsmith's Garden Hotline," which aired for 35 years.

Prior to his stint on Garden Hotline, Ralph Snodsmith gave gardening advice on the popular ABC morning show Good Morning America. He was also the author of several books including including "The Tri-State Gardener's Guide" and "Fundamentals of Gardening." Snodsmith also made personal appearances throughout the country.

Snodsmith was not just a man with a green thumb. He studied the discipline for many years, earning degrees in floriculture and ornamental horticulture.

Snodsmith's many fans appreciated his ability to communicate his expertise in a practical, down-to-earth manner.

Born in Illinois, Snodsmith had spent much of his life in the New York area. He worked as an agricultural extension agent in Rockland County, then  became executive director of the Queens Botanical Garden. After spending almost 40 years in Suffern, N.Y., Ralph Snodsmith's family moved to Stafford, Va.

Ralph Snodsmith is survived by his wife Mary Snodsmith, who says that Ralph was planning his garden at the time of his accident. As any listener could tell you, Ralph Snodsmith was an advocate of planning your garden.

"We hadn't gotten squared away," she said. "We were going to have someone come and till up a spot for us and put in some flowers and vegetables. We did bring some rhododendrons from New York and they're blooming profusely here now."

My husband and I listened to Ralph every Sunday.  We miss him so much already.  Going to be almost impossible to replace him.  Thanks Ralph for teaching us so much.

Sunday mornings just won't be the same without Ralph.  Not only did I learn a lot about gardening, but it was those three special words at the end of his broadcast each week that made my week complete!

Ralph's photo looks just like a roommate of mine by the same name in Plebe year at West Point in 1958. He was perfectly "spoony" (squared away - unlike me), and was more helpful to me then in military matters than he ever knew. I only wish I could have helped him equally in math (calculus was part of everything - they'd have it in English, P.E. and for lunch if possible). I was born in Flushing, NY, and came to the Academy woefully unprepared for military skills that Ralph seemed so good at.  Of course, if it was my "Ralph," it was better he left for what became his most fitting and wonderful career in gardening and helping others in gardening than continuing on our path in the Military. I have fond memories of Ralph. John Hickey, Colonel, USA Retired, Boiling Springs, PA
