Saturday, September 8th, 2012
A rare tornado hit Queens NY with winds of about 70 miles an hour and a second one touched down in Brooklyn around 11:30 a.m. with estimated at 110 miles an hour.
Power lines were down and the full damage report is still being evaluated by firefighters. Thankfully no injuries have been reported.
The Weather Service issued several tornado warnings throughout the day and into Saturday evening, covering parts of Queens, Westchester and Rockland County. An advisory went also out in Connecticut for Fairfield and New Haven Counties.
Bystanders recorded the funnel cloud twirling debris such as parts of buildings and sand. Joseph Mure, who was in the shower when the storm hit, ran outside to take a photo.
“It was crazy. There were a lot of sirens going off. You could see it twisting.”
Meteorologist, Ross Dickman, said it was a weak tornado, measuring a zero out of five on the scale used to measure tornado strength.
