Rare white ravens make home on Vancouver IslandGenetic defect has left birds without colourSandra McCulloch, Victoria Times ColonistPublished: Thursday, June 12, 2008White appears to be the new black among the fashion-savvy birds and wildlife in B.C.
Two white ravens have taken up summer residence in Qualicum along with their three black siblings, says bird expert and author Mike Yip of Nanoose Bay.
He photographed the birds last week in the area of the (aptly named) Ravensong pool and ball fields.

Before you see ravens with 'rose-tinted spectacles', the raven is known as a bad omen for sin, such as 'gluttony and stealing according to some superstitions.
They can also be a bit thick. In the Bible, when the rain stopped, Noah first sent a white raven to explore the sea. Instead of returning to the Ark like it was supposed to, this bird "kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth." [Gen 8:7]. After the raven’s failure, Noah sent a dove.

Being a long-time fan of ravens, I love this story. I have read native legends that say all ravens were originally white but became black through various happenings. ..flying too close to the sun, behaving badly. etc. . Isn't it interesting that even their beaks and legs are white.

One of my Native American stories includes Raven(Crow, their cousin and often linked) and the brave thing he did, didn't work, but someone else, after others tried, finally got the job done: bringing fire to humans.

Furthermore, after the Battle of Armageddon, ravens will descend upon the lands of the wicked. [Isa 34:11]. (like Vancouver?)

Vancouver is the land of the wicked!?

Well, according the Bible Amy... if those 'Messenger of Death' ravens descend upon it.

This is taken from Wikipedia - Go see how 'evil' and 'smelly' they are as they pinch food from the cute Arctic Fox. They also eat a lot of vile things.
quote
Common Ravens are omnivorous and highly opportunistic: their diet may vary widely with location, season and serendipity. For example, those foraging on tundra on the Arctic North Slope of Alaska obtained about half their energy needs from predation, mainly of microtine rodents, and half by scavenging, mainly of caribou and ptarmigan carcasses.
In some places they are mainly scavengers, feeding on carrion as well as the associated maggots and carrion beetles.Plant food includes cereal grains, berries and fruit. They prey on small invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds.[36] Ravens may also consume the undigested portions of animal faeces, and human food waste. They store surplus food items, especially those containing fat, and will learn to hide such food out of the sight of other Common Ravens. They also raid the food caches of other species, such as the Arctic Fox.

Many thanks for comments from everyone. When growing up in Quebec Hurons talked of Ravens as shapeshifters and one of the co creators of Mother earth. Ravens in my view and I have a few that perch on my patio fence or fig tree are intelligent, comical, brazen, love to eat BBQ, actually just like me! One Raven is so bold I caught him in my kitchen a month back eating Milo's (Our Ferret) Food just inside our open patio door.
I saw Milo sleeping (Rare cause he is like a Hyper 2 year old, ) soundly and heard a racket in the kitchen of a bowl being tossed about, went to check and saw this large Raven gobbling up Milo's food.
When Milo is out in the Patio frocliking among the garden, the Ravens almost seem to be Mocking him and laughing, as Milo is too big to eat, and is like Speedy Gonzales around the patio chasing everything and anything that moves, including neighbourhood cats who drop in to sleep on my Adirondack chairs.
His bestest pal is the 100+ pound Rottweiler next door Hoover, who is always stealing Milo's Squeaky toys. Milo tires Hoover out when they race around the backyard, playing International Communist Spies.

Exactly, they pinch food from the B-B-Q too. No halo for them, even if they're white like 'spectors'.
In London, at the Tower of London, the ravens’ favourite haunt is the Tower Green, the former site of royal beheadings.

I too just witnessed another miracle. I live over the mountain pass from Qualicum. About 1 hour ago, I personnally saw a white raven. I am somewhat of an expert on Ravens and can verify that indeed this was a raven. Pure white. Absolutely amazing. Never thought I'd see one.

@ Beaulieu Without carrion birds and other scavengers, the world would be a much smellier place. Quit being so down about these highly beautiful birds. *roll*
