NP Rank:
Rattle Snake Shakes Warning Earth Quake
Tuesday July 28,2008 around 11:40 am. was the scariest experience of my life! I am in Whittier California.
I was in my cottage on a hill, time stopped. 30 seconds transformed into an hour of fear. I saw the hill outside fluctuating like a wave and vibrating like jello. I ran into the main house.
The house keepers were huddled under the main kitchen door frame. I joined them as they were frantically dialing their cell phones to see if their loved ones were alright. No reception at first. The 4 of us stood there waiting for the after shock to come rippling back. The after shock didn't come I started to calm down. I went to my computer to get on etsy to tell someone my experience. I figured the phones wouldn't work. We still had electricity and Internet connection.
5.8 down graded to a 5.4.About 10 minutes later the after shock hit. It sounded like a big massive wooden ship being tossed on the high seas squealing as if it was rammed with the impact crash of another ship. This was less severe and lasted a few seconds then ended. The chandelier swayed to and fro.
I was so full of adrenaline it took me several hours to calm down. Feeling so pumped up I helped my boyfriend lift a table saw. I pushed with mighty force fed by previous fear. The metal popped into place. I felt awake and ready for combat. Fueled by the intensity of the experience.
I remember looking back at all the information I knew about warning signs of earth quakes.
Like animals have this instinctual sense that a seismic event is coming. They leave their burrows and move about seeking safer grounds.
Monday July 27,2008 my boyfriends father found a 5 foot rattle snake out by the front door. The rattler met its end with the edge of a shovel. Its presence was a warning. It twisted in a motion resembling a forecast of a wave that would vibrate the earth. I stood and watched it curiously the muscles still contracting powered by an activated nervous system. It looked so bizarre like it was trying to communicate some cryptic message. It writhed out seismographic like wavelengths back and forth on the walkway entrance, which continuied for several hours. Still moving it was placed into the garden and covered with earthen soil. A rattling keepsake to remember, an earth shaking event.
I want a T-shirt inscribed with, " I survived a 5.4, in Whittier California 2008."
I am moving to Massachusetts. I guess I tasted every thing about living in California. Topped off with a big bang. The whole experience gave me a huge boost to pick up and pack fast to get out on the road sooner who knows when the next one is coming.
