The ever growing Dubai has not sufficient sewage treatment capacity, so wild dumping from collected sewage from home septic tanks became big business for truck drivers.

Down on the beach next to the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club and the fishing harbour there's a stink: raw sewage is flowing into the sea close to prime tourist beaches.

The putrid problem is caused by the illegal dumping of untreated sewage in Dubai's inland storm drain network, as the city's rapid growth outstrips its infrastructure.

At Dubai's only sewage treatment plant there are long queues and serious delays.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff. It is converting into a concrete jungle.

Sanjah, thanks for Flag "Dubai sewage problem beach", the danger of skin infections by waterborn germs is often underestimated, but very dangerous. Unfortunatelly only the Americans are aware of water beach e-coli control with real time warnings at the beach. Since years Miami introduced water quality monitoring. Other countries do too, but the times they measure are not the peak pollution times. A good  advice go swimming early in the morning.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff. The wanton waste that is Dubai appals me!  They spend money doing awfully wasteful things yet dont bother with basic facilities!

gerrypopplestone..Dubai don't bother with basic facilities. Dubai an artificial fast growing city would need a whole Island, Like in Miami for sewage treatment near the beach. Aeration needs time, chlorine only kills the fish and the reefs. You mentioned it very often, no sewage treatment greatest problem fro developing world; amazingly here for the developed world too. We still did not stop to eat, but don't take care where it goes. Well the Brit's brought us the water toilett once, now we need a no flush purifcation solution.

Yeah.  The sad thing is that there are some excellent dry composting toilets around:  both in developing countries as well as in the US!  But nobody is buying them, and the producers don't have much of a clue about persuading the public to take up the offer.  But Bangladesh, it has to said, has achieved wonders!  Rose George's excellent book about techniques to get people to change their habits is really interesting!

gerrypopplestone, "sewage at the beach", thanks to remind us of dry toilet systems, or Dry-toilets with Biogas for Generator and cooking, we almost forgot this technology applied in India or even at the amazon region.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.  It seems that no matter how rich you are, you still produce like the poor.

Barbara..no matter how rich you are, you still produce like the poor. ..The second problem is fresh water from desalination plants. The principle is reverse osmosis, high power pressure pumps rejecting the salt-brine back into the sea, the salt concentration destroying all marine live. A golf course needs more than 1 million gallon water per day, producing two truck loads of solid salt by reverse osmosis. What to do with all the salt, I was thinking to sell it to the water softener industry.

Welcome to Dubai: Sun, Sand an Sewage!

Many years ago, marine wildlife was abundant at these shores. However with the level of construction and land reclemation, there is hardly anything left to see. To make matters worse, a whale shark has been 'stolen' and improsoned in a five star hotel as a tourtist attraction.

Now, the beaches which where the only natural place left in dubai are poluted.

Holliday makers, use your coins wisely and use Dubai as a Tranit to far better places!

Victoria britsk, if you register or leave me an email here, I can answer you . In seawater mixed with sewage are bacterias, funghi, parasites. Antibiotica help short term, but not effective. The moment the water reaches 25°C you should avoid swimming, or go early morning, when it is stilli clear. A shower is necessary after swimming. To treat water born skin disease, you should start with sromectol to kill potential parasites ($25). It would help to know the region you are writing from. Water born diseases are different from area to area, but already e-coli can provoke the skin with some fungi sitting on the bacteria, agressing your skin.
