Record Temperatures in US Heat Wave: Avoid Heat Exhaustion
106F in Newark: Record High Temperature
The Heat Dome continues to broil over half of the United States with sweltering weather. Newark, NJ has posted a record high temperature of 106F (41C). By noon, cities like New York and Washington, D.C. had already surpassed temperatures of 100F.
A sewage leak in the Hudson River caused even more pollution than usual, as well as a strong smell along Staten Island and New Jersey beaches. The East River from the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge to the Verrazano Bridge, the Harlem River and the Kill Van Kull to the Goethals Bridge are unfit for swimming for the time being.
So far, 22 people have died due to the heat wave: heat is the number-one weather-related killer in the United States. If you live in a big city, prepare for the possibility of blackouts or rolling brownouts as everyone tries to use their air conditioners at the same time.
Tips on Beating the Heat
- Stay inside; use A/C if possible
- Drink plenty of water (alcohol will not help)
- Keep plenty of water in the fridge: if the power goes out, you can use it to stay cool
- Avoid strenuous exercise
- Wear loose-fitting clothing
- Don't leave children or pets unattended in your car
- Know the heat exhaustion symptoms
- Know the heat stroke symptoms
Excessive heat warnings, watches and advisories are in place from Texas up to Maine.
