With another potential hurricane on the way to New Orleans, officials are making sure that organisations such as the Red Cross are ready and waiting for it.
See our Gustav coverage here and here.
After Katrina the response and readiness of disaster relief organizations such as FEMA and the Red Cross were questioned due to the extent of damage. But Red Cross Executive Director Dan Hartman say lessons have been learned and they are ready for anything. "Our national Red Cross and all the chapters around are exceptionally prepared. You learn a lot of lessons, and not just us, a lot of the non profits and federal government, FEMA. And they learn a lot. Its more than one agency when something like this happens. But trust me, the Red Cross is ready, with the amount of equipment, people its on the ground now and on the way there its just amazing, staggering number really. "
Hurricane conditions are not likely in the Zanesville area but Hartman says no matter what the conditions- the Muskingum Valley chapter of the Red Cross will be prepared. "We've met all of our certification standards to be a level 2 disaster chapter, which means we can hold our own in any size disaster for about 5 days, within 2 or 3 days we get a lot of resources from our other chapters around us and other states around us. "
Gustav is expected to reach land in the next couple of days, and the Red Cross already has some shelters and disaster relief set up. It seems as if they are prepared for the worse.

They need to be ready at the moment there is a 50% chance of the New Orleans area experiencing tropical storm force winds from Gustav according to the National Hurricane Center.

From the looks of the satellite pictures, wherever this thing hits it's going to really do some damage - here's hoping it doesn't come in just east of New Orleans, like Katrina did almost exactly three years ago to the day ...

This sign in the French Quarter takes on new meaning as Gustav approaches.

This photo is from an orphanage (hafproject.org) in Jacmel, Haiti. Our large red truck was completely buried by eight feet of mountain rock that broke through our exterior wall and flowed onto our property. Lucky, we didn't lose any lives, but did lose just about everything else. Clean-up and rebuilding is going to be quite a lengthy process.
