San Diego, Orange County  Red Tide: It's Blue at Night

San Diego and Orange County Residents have a chance to see a red tide on September 30, 2011. The red tide is caused by an algae bloom. Check out the red tide video below.

While the red tide is pretty freaky and cool, just wait until the sun sets. Then things get interesting. Lingulodinium polyedrum is bioluminescent...

Don't It Make My Red Tide Blue

When night falls, the red tide glows blue. The red tide has been hitting the shore for the past few days, allowing locals to check out rusty-looking water. It's safe to swim in a red tide, but you don't want to get too much of the algae-filled water in your mouth. Also, the water is quite stinky, so you'll want to wash your wetsuit and hit the showers pretty soon after leaving the ocean.

We'll hand it over to Dr. Peter Franks of UCSD's Scripps Institute of Oceanography for a red tide FAQ.
