The good news is that the people of Ruidoso are safe. All that's left now is the mess. A drive through town on Thursday afternoon found most of the bridges still out and mud and debris piled along the river. Crews were cleaning up all over town, including Ruidoso Downs. Races were scheduled to resume on Saturday.

New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Tim Manning said Thursday all stranded individuals in the Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs and Bonito areas were rescued. Over the past four days, local fire departments, law enforcement and National Guard rescued about 900 residents and campers, he said. Searchers Monday morning located the body of Joseph Godines, who was swept away by floodwaters Sunday.

Winston Barton, with assessment teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said he and about eight staff members were assessing homes and businesses Thursday. A Public Assistance team plans to pin down infrastructure damage on Friday, including roads, bridges, buildings and water and sewer lines, he said.

There are a lot of issues facing the residents here. The Ruidoso News has the following emergency information on their website:

EMERGENCY INFORMATION Water is out in three areas of town: Sleepy Hollow, Westminster and Main Street, all in the Upper Canyon. Once water is restored to these areas, be sure to boil your water for three to four days afterward.

As of July 30, the Ruidoso Downs Race Track has been issued a boil order by the Environmental Department.

Three agencies are handling emergency services: Red Cross, Salvation Army and Church of the Nazarene. If you are need of assistance, contact the emergency hotlines at 937-3719 or 258-3482. All emergency management is handled from these numbers.

You will also find a list of bridges affected.
