The Hindus believe that king Bhageerath son of King Dileep, Ikshvaku dynasty was main architect in bringing ganga down to the earth.

As the story goes-Bhageerath ancestors (Sagars) on their victorious march mistakenly offended a sage in penance, thus inflicting wrath of the sage who cursed the Sagars to be reduced to ashes.

When the sage realized what he had done, he assured the sons of deceased that only Ganges water if brought to these ashes could cleanse them and provide them with ultimate liberation or moksha. Bhageerath the descendant of Sagars undertook the Herculean task of bringing from its heavenly abode. he went on severe penance to invoke mother Ganges, She was pleased with the determination of King Bhageerath and agreed on the condition that if lord Shiva could be propitiated in controlling the torrential force of her from falling from sky she would come.

King Bhageerath then prayed to lord Shiva to control the force in his matted hair and release it in the form of small stream fell right into the hair of lord Shiva and was released in small stream with which the king washed the sins of his ancestors. This will lead to catastrophic situation in country. The biggest reason environmentalist have sighted is Global Warming and climatic change Already conditions in country regarding water are precarious as the feuds for water between state governments have become prominent.The findings done by various environmentalists and glaciologists suggest that Himalayan Gangotri glacier has been retreating since 1842. Gangotri the source of Ganges lies inHimalayas in the state of Uttrakhand, in district uttarkashi. The Glacier is 29 kilometer long and approx.2 km wide. It Longest Glacier in the Central Himalayas It was 62 feet per year between 1935 and 1971, now it has doubled.Most of drinking water comes from such rivers like Ganges which will vanish within 30 years as there will be no glacier which acts like a storage tank for the river.

The rise in global temperature will accentuate the melting of glacier, creating havoc in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India COLOR: black;through massive floods leading to loss of lives and shelters. Ultimately flow will decrease and there will be no water left in the river Population equaling Europe resides in the plains of Ganges which stretches from Rishikesh culminating in Calcutta. The other major region being a holy river the inflow of pilgrims 6 months of year does not help to the cause of The Glacier.
