An Eruption is currently underway at the San Cristobal Volcano in Nicaragua and it is emitting volcanic ash in to the air.

The volcano is close to the towns of Chichigalpa and Chinandega. About 333,000 people live there.

"We have received information suggesting a possible VA (Volcanic Ash) emission," said an initial statement from the U.S. Volcanic Ash Advisory around 7 p.m. EDT.

A second advisory from the center, around 7.20 p.m. EDT, confirmed an eruption was underway and said an explosion was recorded at 8.15 p.m. GMT (3.15 p.m. EDT).

The ash is moving towards the west at or below a height of 5 miles. "Ash [is] moving to the west and west-northwest at 10-15 kts (11.5 - 17.2 miles) and extends about 40 nautical miles (46 miles) west of the volcano," the advisory read.

San Cristobal is one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua and has a history of volcanic activity, although nothing has been recorded since 2006. It does errupt frequently however, so this may be no cause for concern.

San Cristóbal is part of a 5-member volcanic complex that bears the same name. El Chonco lies 4 km to the west, and Moyotepe 4 km to the north east. Joined to the volcano's eastern flank is Volcán Casita, which buried a village with a catastrophic landslide in 1998. The scars from said landslide are still visible today. Finally, La Pelona is located on the eastern end of the complex.[1]

It seems more volcanos as of late are erupting mind you it's never a wise idea to live near a volcano. But then again we can't choose where we're born.
