Schultz Fire Near Flagstaff Arizona Now 40% Contained: Map
The Schultz Fire Burning Near Flagstaff Arizona Was 40% Contained By Thursday Evening
Firefighters worked hard on Thursday in Arizona to contain and starve the Schultz fire by burning out the fuel that lay ahead of it; although residents reported more smoke in the region the plan appears to have been a success and by Thursday night the large fire was 40 percent contained.
The fire broke out last Sunday and rapidly grew from 9,000 to 14,000 acres due to the high winds and dry conditions in the region. This map from Arizona Central shows three fires burning in the region.
Noting that "fire attracts fire," fire command spokeswoman Brienne Magee said the plume area heated up so quickly in part because the main fire latched onto it. Helicopters trailing water hoses buzzed the fire lines dropping water and retardant.
"It looked spectacular but it went as planned," Magee said.
Crews are still unsure when it will be fully contained as the terrain is hard for firefighters to reach and the winds could pick up again suddenly and blow the fire in a different direction. The fire is still considered active on the south, west, and north flanks reports AZCentral.
This fire was started by an abandoned campfire.
The Sycamore fire on Tonto National Forest is now 70 percent contained, but is still burning with about 129 firefighters working in the region.
The Paradise Fire has burned about 5,300 acres but is now considered a 'managed burn' and is not threatening any more homes or people.
