The Schultz Fire Near Flagstaff Arizona is Now 10% Contained But it Has Spread to 12,000 Acres

No homes have been lost to the Schultz Fire raging near Flagstaff Arizona, but some news outlets are reporting that thousands of people have been evacuated and more could be forced to flee if the fire continues to grow.

Arizona Central reports that the fire is believed to have been started by an abandoned camp fire near Schultz Pass and Elden Springs and they have a slideshow of photos showing the latest views of the fire.

Yesterday a huge portion of U.S 89 was closed but it has now been reopened; however drivers are asked to travel slow and be warned that the highway could be closed at any time due to poor visibility or to allow fire officials more room to get through.

The 800 firefighters working in the region have been laying fire lines and are said to be encouraged by their ability to save everyones' home so far.

"We have not lost a home," incident commander Dugger Hughes said.

The fire broke out on Sunday morning and has grown steadily since as it is aided by the strong winds in the region. It is expected that the winds will die down on Tuesday to about 15 mph, which will hopefully help the firefighting efforts.

A school in Flagstaff has been converted in to an American Red Cross centre where on Monday night about 376 people had registered.

Anyone who stayed near the Schultz Tank and Elden Trail this past weekend who may have any information about how this fire started are asked to call the Coconino National Forest at 928-527-3600.
