Snow mountain

As freak weather hits Europe three climbers have been killed by an avalanche in the Scottish highlands.

Although it is uncommon for climbers to be killed by avalanches in Britain they are not uncommon in the highlands and few climbers every year are caught in them.

The climbers were on Buchaille Etive Mor when caught by the avalanche.

This mountain forms the backdrop for Amy McDonald in the new Scottish Homecoming video of celebs singing the song Caledonia in an attempt to lure Scots back to visit the homeland.

Two rescue helicopters were scrambled to head for the scene on Buchaille Etive Mor just after 12.15pm when the avalanche hit a group of seven climbers.

Police and members of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team and a police team headed for the scene. Two climbers were airlifted to Bedford Hospital in Fort William A third climber was later found and also taken to hospital.

All three were subsequently declared dead.

An RAF rescue helicopter, was diverted from an exercise in the area and a second helicopter was scrambled from the Royal Navy station at HMS Gannet near Prestwick.

On Friday there were reports of wet and loose snow in many of the gullies in Glencoe. Snowfalls in the past few days have increased the risk of an avalanche and in places the snow reached up to four feet.

This is quite a rare occurance - but a sad one nonetheless.

The others were lucky to be rescued. It annoys me when climbers are giving warnings not to go out they still do then they have to be rescued.

But I think if that was something I had a passion for it would be a great challenge, maybe that is why they go-ahead anyway.

Oh dear, I missed this story I published the same story. Woops =:-)>
