Seven large automakers have reached an agreement on a common system for charging electric vehicles in North America and Europe.

The automakers involved in the standards agreement are Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen.

The system the automakers have agreed upon integrates all charging scenarios into a single vehicle inlet connector as well as uses an identical communication system between the vehicle and the charging station. That protocol is called the HomePlug Green Phy.
