BBC posted news that Egypt still seeks 90% share of the Nile river water and refused to sign the cooperative agreement of the Nile initiative! Among the nine Nile basin countries, Egypt and Sudan refused to sign the agreement sticking to the colonial area forced agreement. This is really shameful. Cooperation and a win-win approach is the only solution for Egypt and Sudan to get their fair share diplomatic wise.

It is clear that Ethiopia contributes 86% of the river water and what Egypt claims is to be the only beneficiary at the expense of Ethiopians dying from short of rain. What logic is Egypt using? Actually, fair utilization of the river water is only the position of the government of Ethiopia. The position of the ordinary Ethiopian people is to sell the water just as others sell their oil. There is no reason why water cannot be commoditized. It is a resource of the source country. The source country has natural and legal right to use its resources.

In my opinion, it is wisdom for Egypt and Sudan to cooperate with the basin countries to utilize the river water fairly than facing the worst. The worst to them is to buy the river water per cubic meter and use or not to use at all. This is the position of ordinary Ethiopians including me on this issue.

No doubt, erstwhile colonies are epitome of shame till date. The masters before leaving their colonies had trained slaves to behave like masters.Masters succeeded, slaves donned the mantle of masters and without getting themselves rid of slave mentality replicated the system of administration of masters. The legacy of colonialism has had to be kept alive to carry on the burden of nostalgia.Bad money drives out good money;worse masters drove out bad masters. Our luck.

The masters not only divided the natives they ruled over, they divided the boundaries as well.Whatever was common was divided, even the rivers. The new masters are not much different from old masters. To them division is permanent and non-negotiable.This is the way Egypt is behaving with the signatories of new agrrement,Ethopia,Uganda,Rwanda and Tanzania.Kenya has supported without signing. The new agreement has not been accepted by major beneficiaries of old agreement,Egypt and Sudan who control more than 90% water of the river Nile.In one of your opinion column you suggested formation of USA2(United States of Africa).I opiniated in my comment that it is never possible.Africans and Asians are not Europeans, were ruled by foreign powers. Our ethos are different. Our approach is individualistis.we lack collective conciousness. If all the six nations had decided to resolve Nile water sharing dispute,a proper mechanism put in place to fix the problem for once and all is possible, provided there is a will. After negotiation of 13 years the new agreement could be signed without participation of Egypt and Sudan. Is it not a sad commentary on Afro-Asian countries?

Very good comment with knowledge of the situation. Thank you t k kidwai!!!

Egypt need to be advised before facing the worst. That worst situation is either we use our water alone or sell what is extra to them!!!
