Next time I visit Kolkata, I'm going in the monsoon season - to see how people living like this manage. It's an outrage that the needs of people have been so blatantly ignored for so long by the City. I've visited shanties in Bangkok and Colombo (OK: they are much smaller problems) where the city have provided basic services within the narrow lanes betweeen the housing and this has made a huge difference.
