Thomas Dietz and his team at Michigan State University have accumulated a list of 17 practices that could have a dramatic carbon-saving impact in the future. If Americans adopted these 17 simple lifestyle and household practices, then US carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 7.4 percent by 2019.

These 17 practices to reduce our collective carbon footprint are simple but as a society we have become addicted to convenience, speed, comfort, and accessibility. These slight adjustments, however, could make a huge difference.

Hanging laundry out to dry, having some tune-ups on vehicles, lowering household thermostats and driving at a maximum speed of 90 km per hour are all practices that could make a serious difference in the future. Some of the other practices include:

Centralise your air-conditioning system

Install low-flow showerheads

Get a more efficient water heater

Use energy-efficient appliances

Fit low rolling-resistance tyres to cars: they minimise the energy wasted as heat as the tyre rolls down the road

Use a fuel-efficient vehicle

Change the air filters on your centralised air conditioning

These changes, if implemented by enough people, could mark an effective change in US greenhouse gas emissions. People's everyday behavior has such a vast impact in a very seemingless way and this study is aimed to show how that can be used for the greater good.
