Langley, BC

Last Wednesday SPCA officials were alerted to an incident of horse cruelty in South Langley.  A couple had put their car into a ditch and were using an emaciated horse to try to pull it out.  The couple had a total of six starving horses on their property.  They were seized by the SPCA.  Fire crews battled to free the exhausted horse from the ditch, but the horse died.  Another horse was euthanized later.  The remaining four are in frail condition and on a 24 hour watch.  The SPCA is recommending charges against the couple.

To make matters worse, there are unsubstantiated reports that the couple are veterinarians.

Langley horse lovers have poured out their hearts to these unfortunate horses, with donations of hay, blankets and offers of foster homes.

Horses have been humanity's partner from early civilization.  They allow us to sit on them and direct them on placid trails or into war.  They have helped the great civilizations of the Near East develop agriculture.  What do they ask in return? -- a few kind words, adequate food and a dry place to sleep.  Cruelty to these noble animals should generate jail time.

Is it not about time our gutless governments passed a law that would make jail time manditory for animal abuse, AND reguire that the equall gutless judges handed out the sentenses?  For  persons of trust (Veterinarians) the sentence ahould be double, just as it is in the military.  Personally, I could quite easily shoot the SOBs

This is truly the sickest story of animal cruelty I have read in a long time - I can't even belive someone could do this - I hope they are never allowed to keep animals again and are at least slapped with an outrageous fine.

This is happening more and more here in the states as people can't afford feed.

People are actually abandoning their horses, letting them run lose near farms they hope will take them in.

The govt. doesn't allow people to take horses to be slaughtered by dog food companies anymore....so people are having to kill and bury horses.  Before, if you didn't want to keep your horse anymore, you could give it to the dog food companies...for example, if they were lame and you couldn't afford to keep them, whatever reason, but people had a place to take them. But, not anymore.

Many horses just don't get fed...they are just starving. The problem is getting worse in the USA.

What's worse? Starving to death slowly or becoming dog food?

To Art_by_Alida, If people can't afford to feed their horses they should sell them, give them away or euthanize them... either through lethal injection or bullet by a skilled person.  If people are abandoning their horses it's because they are IRRESPONSIBLE.  I also think that they are hoping that some kind person will find them and save them, because if they bring them to an auction, chances are very good a kill buyer will purchase them, then they will be shipped for slaughter to Mexico or Canada, for human consumption!  Slaughter is very much alive and well and accessible everywhere in the States.  And how does this excuse these vets? They are professionals in well paid jobs and have access to all the medication needed to euthanize their own horses, plus there is a horse slaughter plant right in their province.  They are cruel, irresponsible and I suspect mentally ill. Here is a link to the cruelty to horses sent to slaughter in the States... documented by the USDA.  Make no mistake... slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia.  http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/nov24/06-108-Records-E.pdf

Sorry, I should clarify one comment in my statement above.  Horse slaughter is accessible in the States through the auctions.  There are no longer any slaughter houses in the States open that are slaughtering for human consumption.  Apparently there is one in Nebraska that is slaughtering horses for other reasons.. maybe that dog food that you're so concerned about,  but more than likely for zoo animals.
