What can you add to the ‘big’ while it is already on the attention of the other many? If you want to make a difference, give more attention to the ‘small’. This is because firstly others cannot easily find the smallest and secondly they do not give attention to anything small. For example, market research which is big and done by many is becoming outdated and being replaced by scenario planning that considers the small as the relevant.
In scenario planning, you should not take small things or information as irrelevant. It is the small that multiplies through time and space that can bring a dramatic change and difference. Therefore, one should listen what an ordinary individual is saying and be switched on. He should read even the tabloids, and any information in every media. He should also observe what is going on around and in the world, observe every events and incidents, etc. It is out of these crowd events, incidents and information that something realistic and significant is framed and developed for making a big difference.
In business, it is said that size matters. Yes, but that is only in absolute terms. In relative terms, the rate of change of the small is significantly higher than the big. One reason is
the volume of risk for the small is less than the big and the change leader will take the risk granted. The more risk one takes, the more difference s/he makes. Another reason related to the first is the change leader will be free of the fear factor from government or society as these observers do not give the small due attention and consideration like big.
