Small Wildfire Threatens Homes in San Diego - Citizens Report by ifindtrends

4pm PST -Looks like it is pretty well contained at this point.

THE BIGGER STORY HERE WAS HOW THE CITIZENS REPORTED AND PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO GET UPDATED INFORMATION FROM THEIR NEIGHBORS.

This fire is not as big as the Pasadena Fire Yet but I thought I would post this from signonsandiego.com . It is an almost minute by minute update from regular people in the area and thought it was a perfect example of crowd powered medi. There is no news on TV yet and not much from the "real news" but it is big enough for them to be flying choppers dropping water for 2 hours now.

--> Fire burning in Sorrento Valley

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is responding to brush fire in Sorrento Valley that has so far burned about 1 acre, officials said.

The fire, on the 3900 block of Sorrento Valley Blvd., was reported about 12:07 p.m., said department spokesman Maurice Luque. No structures are threatened.

Lots and lots of smoke, but there's a chopper dropping liquid (flame retardant? water?) of some kind.

Yes, I see a lot of white smoke from here (north side of fire) and hear helicopters circling. There are firefighters in the backyards of homes facing the canyon. Is or isn't there structures threatened?

From 56 and Carmel Vally Rd, it looks pretty bad right now. Yes, a lot of smoke, although I do see white smoke too, which is a good sign that they are putting it out. I hope it is still true that no structures are threatened.

They are dropping water, I was just over at Torrey Pines and they were dipping down in the lagoon getting water.

Seth, do you mind me asking what street you are on where there are firefighters in the backyards? Thanks for any info.

My wife drove by on East Ocean Air just to see, she said the homes by the power lines right there near the canyon on Ocean Air.

Posted by: seth at April 27, 2008 01:36 PM

I live on West Ocean Air and it looks pretty bad from my home. I also walked up east ocean air to where the firefighters are before they closed off the road to traffic. I hope it is still true that no structures are threatened. The fire/policemen were not evacuating anyone about an hour ago.

Yes, we're in Torrey Hills/Carmel Country area and it looks like the fire may be moving eastward in the canyon. I'm currently seeing only one water dropping helicopter in the air while there were two helicopters at one point. Hopefully that's good news. Any news would be helpful.

Thanks Seth. Smoke seems to have died down a little in the last ten minutes. Let's hope they got it under control.

Police announed a voluntary evacuation about 10 min ago, but smoke is getting much less, it looks like it's on its way to being over.

Our office is very near the fire. One of our guys is there now and he just sent out some photos.

From these, you can see that the fire is on the north side of the PQ canyon and largely in one of the side canyons on the north side. It has reached one of the ridges bordering the main canyon, but doesn't look like it has past this point.

The biggest worry is if the winds starts pushing it up (eastwards) PQ canyon.

Posted by: ted at April 27, 2008 01:42 PM

Lets hope...there is still no news on any local news stations. JoAnn, it does seem like they are trying to push it into the canyon.

Posted by: seth at April 27, 2008 01:42 PM

Please post as soon as anyone hears about any evacuations

Fire moves to fast to wait for anyone to tell you to leave.

Posted by: Tara at April 27, 2008 01:44 PM

Don't wait for anyone to tell you to leave. Fire moves way too fast for that.

We are on the west side of the canyon with a good view. Firefighters are making their way up the hill and have most of the fire out. There is just one part on the upper eastern edge still going, but the wind started heading west, so the fire is burning back on itself. looks pretty good at the moment.

Posted by: Stewby at April 27, 2008 01:47 PM

correction, we are on the south side of the canyon. The wind looks like it shifted back to the east, but things are still looking good. North eastern corner is still the hot spot.

Posted by: Stewby at April 27, 2008 01:52 PM

The hot spot is the north eastern corner, are there concerns for the Carmel Country Highlands area (Carmel Mtn. Rd., and Carmel Country)?

Posted by: JoAnn at April 27, 2008 01:55 PM

We're on the south side of the burning canyon. No news about evacuations so far. The smoke is still thick and dark grey, and we can see the flames from our window. The helicopters are still at it.

Thank you for the updates. There was nothing on TV... we live by the Grand Del Mar hotel, but I worry about my friends' homes and Sage Canyon school. Really appreciate you taking the time to post information.

Well, with the wind shift, things flared up again. Lots of smoke obscuring our view right now, but there's another medium flare-up about halfway down the canyon on the eastern side of the fire. Can't really see the north eastern part at the moment.

Posted by: Stewby at April 27, 2008 02:02 PM

i appreciate these updates, especially since there is no news coverage. we live on calle mar de armonia, across carmel mnt. road from east ocean air and so all we can see is the smoke going away and then coming back.

Over on Vista Sorrento Pkwy, they're still dropping water, my daughter said from the lagoon by helicopter.

We live off of Sorrento Valley Blvd. At least one of the helicopters is landing in the canyon that's not burning (on the south side of the road), near the street, and filling up from a fire hydrant.

I live in the Torrey Ridge complex on east ocean air and carmel mountain road. The firefighters are in our complex and told us they were here "just in case" and that they would tell us over their PA to leave if we had to. From our complex you can see it trying to come up to the top of the canyon to make its way down. Smoke is looking better now...

Posted by: Kathryn at April 27, 2008 02:12 PM

I just walked over to the canyon from the apartment complex (torrey ridge) it looks like it is still in that canyon south of the one by sage canyon. I counted at least 4 heli's.

Posted by: seth at April 27, 2008 02:16 PM

Looked pretty bad from I-5 (not 805!) around 1:30pm. As mentioned above we saw the helicopter flying extremely low and commuting between the lagoon and the affected area. The fire was too close to those power lines on top of the hills, and that bothered us the most.

According to my scanner fixed wing aircraft are on the way. 2:15pm

Keep the information coming. This seems to be our best news source since there is nothing to be found on local TV or radio! We can help alert family and friends if needed. Thank you.

Posted by: JoAnn at April 27, 2008 02:23 PM

No info, because like the Cedar fire, they are off for the weekend.

Posted by: Gumball at April 27, 2008 02:25 PM

Still not looking too bad. Wind is heading east, which is not the direction we want it too, but it's not getting worse, from what i can tell. Most of the activity is midway up the side of the canyon. There are lots of fire fighters with hoses and stuff at the North Eastern edge now, which is closest to the structures.
