Full Solar Eclipse in Novosibirsk (1-aug-2008)

A humble call for content:

As you've probably heard by now, millions around the world enjoyed a solar eclipse on August 1, and we’re looking for NowPublicans with content, observations, or just plain ol’ celestial enthusiasm to help fill out this roundup of coverage.

You can either add your photos and comments to this story, or post your own and drop me a personal message with a link and I’ll add you to the roundup.

A little trivia:

A total eclipse--where the moon completely blocks the sun--was visible only to a thin corridor that spanned the Canadian Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia, and northern China. The eclipse began at 5:20 a.m. ET in Canada, and finished at sunset in China.

People in Novosibirsk, Russia’s third largest city, arguably got the best view. The peak of the eclipse was visible to the city of 1.5-million for almost two and a half minutes, and forecasts calling for cloudy skies proved to be malarkey.

The next solar eclipse will take place July 22, 2009, but won’t be visible from North America.

Fun fact: Historically, people have been freaked out by solar eclipses:

In ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes. Total solar eclipses can be frightening for people who are unaware of their astronomical explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear in the middle of the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes.

Rob Peters, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Cool!

It's a pity, that where I live only ca. 35% of the Sun was covered by the Moon

Partial solar eclipse as seen in Northern Germany nearby Brunswick. Photograph was taken around the maximum coverage of about 20% at 11:23 local time. Camera was a Canon EOS 350D attached to a Schmidt Cassegrain C8 telescope with a f6.3 reducer.
Weather was cloudy, so it was luck to get a good view ...

Taken from the Sea Fortress Suomenlinna in Helsinki, Finland, at 12:40 in the middle of the day.

I used an Hoya R72 IR filter and the images are straight from the raws through photoshop.

Weather for the day was promised to be rainy, but instead we got some nice sunshine and partly clouded skies, which made many people almost unavare of the event happening above their heads, as the sun kept going in and out of the clouds and in Helsinki the event wasn't a full eclipse as you can see. The clouds gave the images some nice effects, and an otherworldly look.

This noon I watched the partitial solar eclipse over western germany and tried to get some photos of it. Since it was cloudy weather, there are some photos wth the clar sun and some with some thin clouds. But on all you just can see the dark part on the sun clearly.

I actually used my camera to photograph from my computer screen NASA's live internet broadcast of the eclipse. I live in an area where the eclipse wasn't visible first hand(Boston in the USA).

I took these photos from my balcony in Las Vegas, Nv. I had to race home from work to get these shots in time. It was worth it, for sure!
