The first solar panel field will be installed in Canada in the near future. Although it will take away from the beauty of the landscape, it promises to not interefere with the eco-system. The Ministry of Environment were involved as it is also a major salmon route. It is a step in the right direction towards renewable energy.

It would be far more effective to have Solar panels on each and every house rather then taking up more space from Nature.

The field should be restored to Nature and reforested and the solar panels put on existing buildings.

They won't be disrupting wild life, it is unobtrusive. It is in a remote area that is not seen from the road. They chose the location because of that and it is an area where the sun is intense from the close proximity to the lake. They have to install them where they have a certain amount of solar rays. Not every area in Ontario is able to provide that. This is Canada's first experiment using solar energy, modeled after the success of Germany. They do have solar panels on every home there, but also fields of panels to provide to industrial areas etc..The area was carefully studied and the Ministry of Natural resources measured what effect this would have on nature. The delicate balance of the eco-system will not be disturbed, that was an issue as protecting the forests here is a very important.

A better more effective and environmental friendly solar energy system is in use in Seville - Spain, called THERMIC SOLAR ENERGY System. The principle is simple and more versatile and uses less space. Mirrors are placed in about halve a circle around a tower. The sun radiates into the mirrors the whole day long and the mirrors transfer the collected heat from the sun to the tower top where it heats water. This water steam is used to turn generators that generate electricity for about 50% of the towns inhabitants, another tower is under construction for the rest to supply electric energy to all 800,000 inhabitants.
