One of the standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar.
I returned later that night because I wanted to be able to say I had been there at midnight.
It was an incredible experience, the place had a real “vibe” and the sky was like nothing a “townie” like me had ever seen before. There was no light pollution to diminish the spectacle up in Orkney, the sky was crammed with millions of stars and the spiral arm of the milk way disappearing into the blackness of space.

This shot was taken at the Ring of Brodgar on the Island of Orkney, situated off the north coast of mainland Scotland in September 2007.
I went back later that night and the difference in the sky from my home in industrial central Scotland was hard to believe.
There were more stars visible than I had ever seen, before and the spiral arm of the milky way could bee seen clearly.
