A spectacular geologic feature is Spider Rock, a sandstone spire that rises 800 feet from the canyon floor at the junction of Canyon de Chelly and Monument Canyon. Spider Rock can be seen from South Rim Drive.
According to traditional Navajo beliefs the taller of the two spires is the home of spider woman.
The Spider Grandmother is creator of the world in Native American religions and myths such as that of the Pueblo and Navajo peoples. She was responsible for the stars in the sky. She took a web she had spun, and laced it with dew. She then threw it into the sky, and the dew became the stars.
