Spring Grizzly Bear Hunt Starts in BC: Are Too Many Killed?
The Spring Grizzly Bear Hunts Begins April 1st in BC, But Are Too Many Being Killed?
The David Suzuki Foundation released a report on April 1st, the same day that the spring Grizzly Bear hunt begins in British Columbia, stating that too many bears were killed during the last hunt. The report claims that the hunt leaves more animals dead than what the province's wildlife guidelines allow and asks the government to end the trophy hunt once and for all.
Hundreds of bears are killed during the trophy hunt season and bears may be killed for just their head or skin and the rest of their carcass may be discarded.
"This is new science that really questions the sustainability of the hunt," Faisal Moola of the foundation said in an interview.
The report looked at the bears killed during the period of 2004 and 2008 and then looked at the numbers killed in the 'allowable human-caused mortality rate'. Out of the 57 different population areas for the bears, in 20 of those more bears will killed by hunting than the province's mortality rates allows. This happened at least once in each area in the five years that were examined as reported by the Canadian Press.
These numbers, once combined with other human kills, such as legal kills by wildlife management officials and also illegal poaching, meant that the allowed mortality rates were exceeded in 36 areas.
"You can't look at trophy hunting in isolation - you have to look at trophy hunting in addition to the other sources of human-caused mortality," said Moola.
"What the study shows is that if you removed trophy hunting from the picture, you would actually drop the mortality rate below what the government thinks is sustainable."
It is thought that British Columbia is home to about half of the Canadian Grizzly Bear population and a quarter of the whole population in North America. Grizzly Bears are often slow to reproduce and even though hunting is restricted to certain parts of the province, there is a hunt every spring and fall in British Columbia.
How Can You Help?
If you want to help stop the Grizzly Bear Hunt you can sign a petition or donate to the campaign and let your local government representative know that you are against the trophy hunt.

It doesn't seem right that we intervene in nature anymore, except where the animals have outgrown their confined habitat. I don't understand the mentality of people wanting to kill animals for the sport of it. Take away animals and they might do what they do in Washington DC, just start killing one another over jewelry and such.

Absolutely pathetic that we allow meat heads with guns to kill a wild treasure in BC Grizzlies, only a total dip-shit would condone such a thing. Well look who's in power here.

We Human have and are still killing to many. Eventually our disregard and disrespect for our world and nature will kill us as well.

I guess Im the total pathetic dip shit that John refers to above. This report is once again a report by the anti-hunting lobby to brain wash the average person into believing them. Stay tuned for a proper scientific response to this outrageous report. The money behind this is the Schad Foundation, namely Robert Schad, owner of Husky Mould Injection systems. This is a company that produces plastic products that have polluted the air and waters for many years. Get to know all the facts and take a stand against this sort of non sense. Read the MOE reports in BC realize when your being snowed.

Good call Bob. Before someone starts saying that there's hardly any bears left, maybe they need to leave their apartment and find out for themselves.
