Territory drive, Australia

Australia's northern capital city, Darwin will remain isolated from the east for up to three weeks due to flood damage to the sole highway link.

Heavy rain over the past two days has washed away a large section of road and repairs may not commence for a week, assuming no more rain falls.

The Barkley Highway is the sole sealed road link to the eastern states and now the only connection to the east is via the long haul via Adelaide and the Stuart Highway.

Food prices are expected to rise as a result of the increased travel distance.

Hundreds of travellers will need to backtrack and make the equally long trek via Adelaide, or make air travel arrangements.

The heavy rain came as a monsoon trough moved over the area, bringing more rain than has been seen in many years to several locations.

Thank you for the post matte. I was not aware that Darwin would be cut off for that long. They must have extensive damage as well then.

yes, and more rain is falling. Part of the issue is the isolation of the area.

you can see it is 200 miles from Mt Isa.

Here is the CBD of Camooweal - not a big place - http://www.panoramio.com/photo/6877813
