TEHRAN (Reuters) - A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Iran on Wednesday near Bandar Abbas, site of a major Iranian oil refinery, the U.S. Geological Service said. Iran's state-owned Press TV described the tremor as strong but said there were no reports of casualties. The Fars news agency quoted an Iranian official as saying the quake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale. Magnitude 6 quakes are capable of causing severe damage. USGS said the earthquake hit at 1100 GMT (12 p.m. British time) about 53 km (33 miles) west-southwest of Bandar Abbas at a depth of 34.6 miles (55 km). Bandar Abbas is a major Iranian port with oil installations including a refinery.

We felt the aftershock in Dubai - we had to vacate our offices for an hour.

Thanks Amy, the earthquake channel is a great idea (nearly as great as the UFO one!).

Some chatter on the net is trying to say the earthquake is connected to the "big bang" collider!

Since the Iran one there has been a 6.6 in the Atlantic and a 5.8 in Chile, normally on average a quake of 6 magnitude or above happens once every 3 days.
