Supporters say bottle bill would bottle up litter

Updated: Mar. 18 7:36 p.m.Fayetteville, N.C. — One lawmaker is recycling an idea that was tossed out by the General Assembly two years ago: Require a deposit on drink bottles and cans in North Carolina.
Sen. Doug Berger, D-Franklin, says requiring customers to pay an extra 10 cents on each can and bottle could cut the amount of litter along state highways. The deposit would create an incentive for people to turn the cans and bottles in at designated collection sites to get money back.
I have always been a proponent for cash for plastic bottles and cans. Until we give people an economic incentive for recycling, most will not do it. I used to collect glass bottles as a child and redeem them for cash.

It works here in Vancouver. I leave all my bottles and cans out in a recycling box in the lane and they are taken away by "recyclers" within hours if not minutes. You will never find a single can or bottle on our streets or highways. If you want your deposits back there are plenty of places that will take then back and pay you your deposit. For the homeless it is a major source of income as they scour the streets, alleys, trash cans and dumpsters for anything recyclable.
