Sustainable logging could create millions of green jobs says UN

In this current economic climate, the United Nations is urging all countries to develop 'green' jobs, as this could not only help the economy, but also help the environment as well. The key to this is sustainable forest management, and the UN is predicting that up to 10 million jobs could be created.

This plan will work best for countries that have a large amount of rural unemployment who do not practice sustainable logging.

While all countries could benefit from investing in these green jobs, Nair said, Asia and Africa -- and to some extent Latin America -- could benefit the most. India, China and almost all countries in Africa stand to benefit, he added.

Sustainable forestry not only helps the environment by only logging certian areas or a certain number of trees, but also helps to not deplete them.
The UN Committee on Forestry meets next week in Rome, Italy, and this idea will be discussed there.
Next week is also World Forest Week.

Will any one listen and follow through with this?

In Canada I spend one spring working for a replanting program that Trudeau introduced for sustainable logging and part was run by the government and part by the logging companies. All where given by government sponsored nurseries tree sprouts to plant. the government run program used dedicated young people to plant the trees by hand and it worked. The Logging companies in many cases dig a hole and put all tree sprouts in a single hole. A great way to save time and money, however totally counter productive and hard to police.

Excellent post, Amy.  Lets hope the UN do something about the illegal loggers.

Sometimes, it's because the politicians either don't think it through or just want to be seen to be doing something.

Good point about responsible logging which does not get a lot of press.
