The garden is UNESCO protected as one of the best examples of Chinese classical gardens. The garden was built by an official who wasn't very officious and frankly preferred designing gardens. I know a few officials who could take a leaf out of his book..

This is the Humble Administrator's Garden in a town called Souzhou about 1 hour by bullet train outside of Shanghai. The administrator preferred designing gardens to being officious.
The garden dates from 1882. It and the adjacent garden are protected by UNESCO as unique examples of traditional garden design. At the weekends it is full of mostly local tourists escaping the smog of the 18m populated Shanghai. Under new Chinese government plans as Shanghai expands the amount of green space in Shanghai should be increased to 38% of ground coverage.
