Coming up on the Syncrude oil sands operation from the south. The Boreal Forest gradually gives way to cleared forest, then to lands where the topsoil has been cleared and then the 80 metre deep oil sands mines. The postage stamp of a truck on the road is one of the giant trucks with a 400-tonne payload. More than 3,500 sq. km. of lands have been leased for mining operations like this.
