Taiwan: Typhoon Fanapi Causes Widespread Damage to Agriculture

Taiwan is taking a big hit from Typhoon Fanapi, which has destroyed over a tenth of Taiwan's forestry, crops and livestock. Agriculture losses are reported at over $65 million. Over 100 people have been reported injured.

The Council of Agriculture issued landslide warnings for 61 rivers, advising nearby residents to evacuate.

Flooding from Typhoon Fanapi, which made landfall near Taiwan's eastern coastal city of Hualien Sunday morning, had affected a total of 4,776 hectares of agricultural land as of 0000 GMT Monday, damaging NT$233.5 million worth of crops including bananas and rice, the Council of Agriculture said in a statement.[/q]
