Teklanika River

This is an overlook of the Teklanika River. This is a braided river, meaning that the various channels of the waterway always braid in and out. The water is not low. When the glaciers were melting from the last Ice Age, however, this channel would have been completely full.

This river flows north, as do all rivers north of the Alaska Range. Just upstream of here is where Christopher McCandless died trying to live on his own in the wilderness. His story is the subject of the book and film "Into the Wild."
