“To those who say 10 years is not enough time, I respectfully ask them to consider what the world’s scientists are telling us about the risks we face if we don’t act in 10 years.” — Al Gore

The Al Gore quote above appeared in a Bryan Walsh effort, Gore’s Bold Plan to Save the Planet, published today in TIME.  After reading the article and the front-page teaser photo shown beneath the word “Analysis," I was forced to conclude that none of the people involved in the article — not Gore, the writer or the magazine’s top executives — share any commitment to honest and objective journalism, especially when it comes to the subject of global warming.*

All three chose to discount tens of thousands of scientists when they opted to publish the piece without mentioning some important facts published Wednesday in a  DailyTech article:

The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists (a.k.a., “scientists”), has reversed its stance on climate change and that many of its members do not believe in human-induced global warming; and

That article is backed up by an Editor’s Comments on the APS web site.

So much for honesty and objectivity in journalism. Oops. Did I just describe TIME’s publishing effort as journalism? My mistake. I didn’t mean to do that.

*Editor’s Note: I could not, in good conscience, describe Walsh as a journalist or reporter. Similarly, I could not place an “editor” label on any of the magazine’s decision-makers involved in publishing Walsh’s puff piece. Why? Because professionals carrying the titles of journalist, reporter and editor, in my opinion, must be objective and believe in objectivity. The folks at TIME do not.

UPDATE:  After publishing this article, the DailyTech article cited above was pulled down, apparently the result of politicking going on at both the web site and the APS.  Regardless, I stand by my belief that human-induced global warming is a farce and that TIME sucks up to Al Gore.

UPDATE #2: More about the APS and their stance on global warming can be found in this interesting article published today at The Corner on National Review Online.

It's good stuff. That's unpossible, Al Gore made a Oscar winning Movie, He has all the Celebrities on his side, Al Gore won a Nobel Prize~1  Time Magazine is a time honoured publication. No, No, No this story is Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, 50,000 scientists must be mistaken.  Certainly Al Gore would not have gotten all these accolades, as well as lucrative speaking engagements if he were One Big Lying Ball of Crap!   OOpps gotta go, the Starbucks Latte Truck is ringing outside.

Bold of you, Bob, to go up against Gore and Time. Wonder who owns Time? guess Time doesn't care if they ruin their rep. Oh, sorry, what rep?

Gee - according to my reading of the APS home page, their position on climate change has NOT changed:

APS Climate Change Statement

APS Position Remains Unchanged

The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007:

"Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate."

In fact the  author of the Daily Tech article quoted in "TIME Ignores 50,000 Scientists" has now posted this correction to its conclusion:

Updated 7/17/2008

After publication of this story, the APS responded with a  statement that its Physics and Society Forum is merely one unit within the APS, and its views do not reflect those of the Society at large.

Can the author of this post try whittling down the 50k figure to something more realistic?

The APS is just saying that one componet disagrees  with another componet at the APS.  The Physics group has concluded that the global warming is NOT man made and is a solar issue that is effecting the Solar system.  There is is very low Hummer emissions on Jupiter.

No, that is not true, politisite.  Did you read the AMS statement?

"An article at odds with this statement recently appeared in an online newsletter of the APS Forum on Physics and Society, one of 39 units of APS.  The header of this newsletter carries the statement that "Opinions expressed are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of the APS or of the Forum."  This newsletter is not a journal of the APS and it is not peer reviewed."

AMS is saying that one of the 39 units may have some disagreement with the majority opinion. Even if that unit  represents one thirty-ninth of the total 50,000 members, the author should revise his headline.

The Daily Tech article claimed that the AMS has reversed its stance on climate change and that many of its members do not believe in human-induced global warming..."

Accordingly I am flagging your story as Fishy.

Hey BMCWrites I found some things that didn't pass my sniff test.

The AMS has clarified that one of 39 groups has posted a newsletter with an article written by two scientists who dispute the majority opinion. Even the authors admit their opinions  "are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of the APS or of the Forum."

The headline should be rewritten.  "Two scientists break with organization over climate change" would be more accurate.

Two out of 50000 Scientist cannot agree with Gore and that makes the News?

I would say that is defamation, disinformation and propaganda! This is some the worth kind of news around! BMCwrites, you should know better, especially with the NW hat on!

Actual News Geezer -- I added an update to the post above, noting the fact that the  DailyTech article cited has been pulled down for some reason -- perhaps a complaint by APS officials.  Regardless, I stand by my belief -- backed by thousands of reputable scientists -- that human-induced global warming is a farce.  Further, I stand by my belief that Bryan Walsh and TIME sucked up to Al Gore and repeatedly fail to present an objective look at issues related to so-called "climate change."  If you don't agree that TIME showed a lack of objectivity in the article, Gore’s Bold Plan to Save the Planet, then I would have to question your objectivity as well.

...and a second update.

And yet you maintain the erroneous headline.  What is your evidence that Time Magazine is ignoring 50,000 scientists?

As a contributor who clearly is upset with TIME for biased, inaccurate reporting, you should strive for  the highest standards in your own work. You can demonstrate that commitment by changing your headline, or else provide evidence to support it.
