After PETA's sucess against KFC in Canada (see NowPublic Here) the Australian section protest against KFC farming methods. Again PETA manage to hit the headlines - here in the tabloid The Sun - by using page 3 tabloid methods - it gets the message across - lets see how sucessful they are. Some will question this approach as crass but maybe one has to hit below the belt at times if one really believes in a cause.

CAGED chicks protested against fast food chain KFC with a topless demo.

The trio of babes said they want to keep customers ABREAST of the chain's treatment of chickens.

The women - girls from animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – sat in a large cage in Sydney, Australia, holding signs that read "Chicks Agree: Boycott KFC".

I've done many of these protests and have heard various responses - from "that's horrible" to, "well, they were going to die anyways". What people are not understanding is that there are more humane ways to kill these chickens for human consumption, the best of which is referred to as "Controlled Atmosphere Killing" -

"Controlled-atmosphere killing is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-approved slaughter method that is currently used to kill 75 percent of turkeys and 25 percent of chickens in the United Kingdom and 10 percent of all birds in the European Union. CAK removes oxygen from the birds’ atmosphere while they are still in their transport crates. The birds are not “gassed” (i.e., asphyxiated); they die from lack of oxygen, or anoxia, which is a painless process. CAK eliminates the numerous animal welfare, economic, and worker-safety issues associated with electric immobilization:

  • With CAK, birds are dead before they are removed from their crates, shackled, bled, and scalded in defeathering tanks. Accordingly, these stages do not hurt the birds, damage or contaminate their carcasses, or pose a risk of injury to workers.

  • With CAK, workers never handle live birds, so there are no chances for abuse. Worker ergonomics and safety are vastly improved. Lights can be kept bright, the air stays clean, and workers do not need to struggle with flapping, scratching, defecating, and vomiting birds." (Source)"

In addition to the terrible conditions in which chickens are raised and slaughtered, warehouse workers are subject to poor working conditions, high risk of illness and infection, and many other problems associated with corporate greed and treating employees poorly. Since we are discussing chicken slaughter, let me give you some examples of what happens when workers are consistently subjected to these conditions: they physically abuse chickens while they are still alive by kicking them, spitting tobacco juice in their faces, breaking their legs, wings, or necks, and other similar forms of unnecessary and cruel aggression. On more than one occasion, human urine and fecal matter has been documented - sometimes first hand as it is occurring, as workers have been caught urinating on the conveyor belts that carry these chickens.

At the very least, one can agree that supporting a company who treats its workers so poorly and simultaneously allows them to partake in such abuse is the wrong thing to do. And we can all agree that cruel treatment of animals that will eventually serve as food is not a necessary fact of the process. There ARE better ways, and as a matter of fact, Kentucky Fried Chicken's own Animal Welfare Advisory Board has advised them to MAKE these changes. Have they listened? No. They hide behind this "Advisory Board" as an easy way to keep the public at bay. Most people won't take a step further and check to see if they've actually implemented any of the suggestions from the AWAB. The answer is a resounding no. In addition, many former members of the AWAB have admitted leaving the board because they felt "used" as part of a marketing and public relations scheme, as opposed to someone actually utilizing their expertise as they were originally told.

It comes down to 2 very simple words: CORPORATE GREED. Though a vegan diet is the best for animals, our health, and the environment, if you are going to eat animals I encourage you to "vote with your dollar" and vow to never eat at Kentucky Fried Cruelty (*ahem*, I mean Chicken) again until they implement the basic animal welfare standards given to them by their OWN Animal Welfare Advisory Board.

I didnt knew all this... I am chocked !!! For along time , more then 10 years I didn´t eat in KFC but then one Sunday I was with my husband and we pass by but for shure was the last time !!

Not much newsworthy happening at this KFC. I called it Kentucky Fried China, as any time I was around during my stay there, this KFC in Chongqing, China (Jiang Bei District) was brimming with locals enjoying their crispy chicken.

Hi.
I took this picture in the northern section of Prague. While traveling in Czech Republic and Poland this spring it occurred to me that KFC was one of the more visible franchises from USA. There are two stores in the Old Town Square in Prague; this is not a picture of either one of them. Fried “chicken” the best thing to export, really?
