MILE LONG TORNADO IN KANSAS

UPDATE: 8:22PM EST

Two people have been found dead.

Authorities checking on a car stranded in a field Saturday morning found two people killed by a powerful storm that raked the state a day earlier with at least 17 tornadoes.

The Friday storm destroyed several buildings and injured at least six people, including one hospitalized in serious condition in Wichita, authorities said.

Several tornadoes touched down Saturday in northwestern Oklahoma. A twister destroyed three barns at a hog farm near Lacey in Kingfisher County, about 75 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, said Michelann Ooten, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Emergency Management Department.

Multiple tornadoes swept through Kansas and Oklahoma, damaging homes and infrastructure, and displacing residents.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City said there were at least 10 twisters that touched down in central Kansas, while the Goodland office reported seven or eight in the western part of the state.

At least four people were hurt in Stafford County, including one person who was taken to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries, said Sharon Watson, spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General's Department.

Many residents were treated for cuts and bruises, but so far only one death has been reported from Friday's twisters.

Thosewho fled their homes wait as fire fighters inspect for gas leaks thatcould cause explosions, as damage to gas lines may have caused leakage.

Expertssay the tornadoes were likely a category EF-3, sustaining winds from135-165 mph in Greeley County and 111-135 mph in Windsor County.

Oklahomasaw far less damage after residents reported seeing a twister Friday, but in Thursday's storms a 14-year-old boy was killed after his fatherdrove onto a washed out road.

This comes on the heels of the tornado damage in Colorado.

Hi Jordan, the deadly Kansas tornadoes happened yesterday (Friday, thought I'd make that clear given international time zones). But we have a new OK outbreak today (Saturday).

We've got a nasty system, the one noted above, that's just sitting and building strength to the SW of our area.

Thanks for remembering the Plains!

Thanks for making that distinction PEP. To be honest, there seems to be so many these days that it's hard to keep track! I'm sure not for you though! Hope all is well down there...

Hi Amy, it's been a very active storm season.

That system continues to build to the SW of us. It produced one tornado that literally looked like the special effects tornado in the Wizard of Oz.The resemblance is amazing.

Thanks for checking in!

That is crazy! Very 'Wizard of Oz'!

What kind of warning systems are in place? Do the authorities try to evaculate people? It doesn't sound like they do, perhaps because it is very sudden. When a Tornado touches down, how much time is left for people to escape? Do people build underground tornado shelters, (we used to have air raid shelters during war time and underground nuclear (for the cold war) shelters which has several floors. Would an underground shelter be useless and unsafe if there is a tornado? How are the 'powers that be' protected from tornados.. I know our ex PM was protected with the shelter I mentioned because I saw it at the time! It would be interesting to see how they protect themselves.

Thanks for the news.. News 24 hasn't mentioned this.
