Toronto commuters are breathing a sigh of relief as the TTC annouces that that it is adding 31 routes by the fall.

Two years of sardine-like packing onto TTC buses ends for transit riders on Sunday when the largest expansion in the city's transit history takes effect on 46 routes.

More service will be added to an additional 31 routes by the fall.

"No matter where you are in Toronto, you will feel this new service," TTC chair Adam Giambrone said this morning while announcing the improvements at the Arrow Road bus garage.

Buses are being added to virtually every major route in the city, but the long underserviced northwest and northeast corners will feel the improvements most, said Mayor David Miller.

I hope it does relieve some of he overcrowding, I still think buses will still be bunched together, the first one packed then two empty ones behind!!!! There will still be gaps. Will it stop the problem of short turning buses, then number of times I've been asked to get off the Steeles west bus at the centrepoint mall. I hope so, but I have my doubts. Now there are several things that that can be done... for one... at major intersection, passengers should learn to exit buses by the rear doors, so passengers can be getting on whilst people are alighting. That can cost the bus the lights and on a frequent route like the 29 the next bus is already behind waiting, that one of the things that lead to bunching. Passengers should move down as far as they can even if going one stop, nothing more infuriating that seeing a bus go by where that back is empty because people are crushed in the front. The next big thing is the actual traffic the bus has to fight through... we need BUS ONLY lanes on several busy streets even if it takes a lane away from the cars then so be it. Hats off to the TTC for trying... but we need a concerted effort by all levels of government to deal with the overall problem and improving the efficiency of moving large numbers of people around the city.. and quite frankly the car is NOT the way.

These new buses might look great but they have some trouble getting up slippery hills in a snow storm! 8 of them were stuck half way up this hill in Toronto on Feb 6 2008.
