Town Waste Dumps
The growing cities and towns of Goa are facing typical WASTE MANAGEMENT problem.
The municipal councils of every major city of Goa (Panaji, Margao... Ponda) are searching high and low for waste dumping site. Our City and Town planning has a major flaw, there is no real thought given to identifying the dumping site, taking into consideration the RATE OF GROWTH of the city.
One fine day the officials realise that the present dumping site is inadequate to handle city's waste. Now the search begins, the officials 'zero in' on near by village. No consideration is given to the 1) environmental impact 2) Health hazards to the locals.
Recently Ponda is witnessing a controversy over proposed waste dumping site. The proposed site is on the top of a pristine PLATEAU on the top of a hill off the PONDA-USAGAO highway.
Dumping and processing of town's waste at this site will have adverse environmental impact on the surrounding area.
The plateau is home to mammals like Jackal, Grey Hare, Wild Boar, Palm Civet and Wild Cat. The area is also bird rich. The villagers at the base of the hill avail drinking water from the perennial spring. In rains the water will percolate from the plateau carrying the toxic material and polluting all the natural water sources at the base of the hill.
The villagers are opposing the Municipalities move. It is PONDA town dwellers responsibility to support the villagers and also assist the town planners to identify a 'better' dumping site so that the health and environmental damage is kept to minimum.
